TATA SKY Plus – How Justified ?
We daily see Aamir and Asin trying to convince us to buy a TATA SKY PLUS connection but how justified is buying a TATA Sky Plus ?
Indian DTH market is really hot these days with many new players entering off late.Currently DISH,TATA SKY,BIG TV,Airtel and DD Direct are the players.The news is that even Videocon is planning to come into DTH market(Change is refreshing ; ) ).
TATA SKY came up with this new product in market TATA Sky plus long time back.TATA Sky plus has a DVR(Digital Video Recorder) built in on which you can record your TV which you can view later.
I really enjoy Aamir Khan’s and Asin’s TV Ads.But then sometimes i think how justified it is to have a DVR in a DTH.We will take various reasons point by point.
1) You can pause LIVE matches and continue from where you left : In commercials many times this point is made that if you are watching a match and you get some urgent work,you can pause the match,finish your work and continue with the match where you left.But if you think seriously,who will want it.We all want the current score then and there.e.g. If Barcelona and Real Madrid are playing a match,Real is leading 1-0 and an important call comes which you take and pause the match.You return half an hour later.
Would you be interested in knowing the current score or you would be happy watching from there even if chances are in reality Barca may have scored 2 goals by then ?
Or as they claim in this commercial sleep early,record the match and watch in the morning.I don’t think it makes sense when you actually know the match is over and you can know the result in a minute?
Even you wanna see what actually happened,there are highlight shows again and again or stil there is YouTube.com
what say ?
2) You can record your Soaps: In Asin’s Ads she says what if two serials are coming on two diff channels and you like both,you either record it on TATA Sky + (if you have one) or miss the other or at best watch each other during commercial breaks.
But i wonder,in reality all these daily soaps are repeated over and over again.The 8 pm 9 pm shows are repeated at 11 12 in the night or the next day afternoon.So people can watch it then obviously.This is how actually i have seen people doing.And anyways after recording also you would be watching at the same time slots.
Who would like to watch a serial through DVR when the chances are same serial is coming on the same channel in the repeat slot live on television.
what say ?
3) You can record movies : With about 10 dedicated channels and same movies repeating over and over again on channels.Who would like to record movies ?
4) You can record your important business programs while your spouse or kids are watching their favourite channel : This point might be justified till some extent but still,a person interested in such critical programs and news would rely on more relaible source than a home TV(fitted with TS+).

5) You can do quick recording : UI of the Sky Plus is on a slower side as compared to that of the regular TATA Sky. This becomes significant when two simultaneous recordings are being made.
I agree there is a lot more to TATA Sky plus.
TATA Sky Plus can mean
1) More Control
2) More Freedom
3) Better Video/Audio Experience
4) Happy family(claimed in TATA Sky Blog)
I agree to these points.
Differentiation and providing USP to your customers is the Mantra.Even customers like a product which is better and different from others.
But what if it comes at a cost, a lot of cost ?
Please compare the prices/costs of normal TATA Sky Connection to a TATA Sky Plus.
TATA SKY Cost : Rs 1599 (DIGICOMP BOX) + Rs 1000(Installation Charges)+Rs 125(subscription monthly fee)(source: http://tatasky.com/cost.html)
TATA SKY PLUS Cost : Rs 8999(DIGICOMP BOX)+Rs 1000(installation charges)+ Rs 50(TATA Sky Plus usage charges)+Rs 125(minimum monthly charges)(source:http://www.tataskyplus.com/cost.html)
A Difference of Rs 7450.
I can buy a new decent 21′ TV in this much cost and solve all my problems of program clashes with my spouse or child.
So is buying a TATA Sky Plus justified to the extent of spending an extra 7.5 k that too for reasons you are not even sure of ?

As per my opinion this Tata sky+ Product is very costly. That is Tata sky+ (DVR) is costing Rs.10000/- incl. Installation charges and Rs.50 per month as usage charge so total cost is Rs.10600/- Plus the package cost you have chosen as per you your requirement.
Which makes our one time investment very high. this is major drawback in their Product.
Further I agree that their User interface is not very good and user friendly and also it was quite slow, further it took time in changeing one channel to other channel.
Also they don’t have any previous channel button through which you can direct go to the previous channel or swtich between 2 channels very easily.

How often we feel tht \If the show timing would hav been bit late or early thn i would have been able 2 watch it\ so in dese kinda circumstances TATA SKY PLUS can b helpful…
Even in joint family we see tht der is a clash of interest whn it comes 2 watching TV so dose issue can b solved thru dis product….
Wen i was a kid i used 2 watch Duck Tales on Sony which used 2b aired at 6.30 pm bt dis was d same tym wen my father would come from office nd watch daily news…so either 1 of us had 2b at losing end..at tht tym if i would hav had PLUS thn things would hav been much more easier nd simpler…
I feel tht TATA SKY PLUS has given us an option to \CUSTOMIZE OUR LIFE\(at an added cost)

Yes I totally agree mate on this !
But again i think this was in earlier times when there were not much channels and the repeat shows funda was not there.
But still i agree it gives a lot of freedom to us.But at a cost which is quite high !

Nicely written, no doubt.
But one thing i wud like to bring out. When you go and buy hard disks worth thousands. Now according to your arguments we get everything on net or youtube for tht matter !!
y bother saving it on a thing high on our pockets.
Now you can save upto 45 hours of playback. ( though less as compared to hard disk: but the point holds).
Moreover it may be a been for ouse qives or ladies or not so tech savy person, as he cana sae it for multiple views at any time . After all that is y we buy hard disk , as it offers u flexibility to watch it n e time. Don’t e ???
So repeat telecast is of not much use here.
Though i know the cost of tata sky plus is a bit on higher side, but if you are getting some higher facilities then u r bound to pay higher. If u justify the price of normal tata sky, then compared to it the cost of plus is jus a tinch on the higher side. ya u can ague that cost of tata sky is high, which leads to newer demension altogether. right ??

Yes bro ! Even i have agreed to it that TATA Sky Plus can mean a lot to you and can give you flexibility you never thought of.
The soaps and such shows are watched more often in middle class homes in india.And if you sell your product to such a segment then the price is too high and if you are targetting higher premium segment then ad campaigns are not very clear.So even i want to know and understand the whole marketing strategy behind tata sky thats why i have written on this !

I believe that something like a DVR is still a requirement and necessity in these days of ibnalerts, tweets and youtubes.
There are quite a few diehard fans i know who wud definitely like to watch the matches (cricket and football specially) that they missed due to sleep or other work.
as for the ladies, the serials are repeated i know, but who would not like to pay a little more for the conveinience of watching the missed episodes at their own leisure.
Now that the issue of requriement of the DVR is established, the issue of price comes into the forefront. And fortunatley/unfortunately TATA has has taken care of it, NOW.
The price has reduced to Rs 4999 (its an promotional offer, but have faith in these guys, they will continue some type of promotion later too). I am quoting this reduced price from Ad that they have put in TOI today(5th Sept)

Its a nice blog. By the way i do a late night shift have always felt need of DVR. Whenever i came back home, i always felt if i could watch the best of 9pm movies. I have just ordered tatasky+ and now i dont have to stay indoors in weekend afternoon to watch EPL matches ( my wife hates me for wasting weekends cheering for chelsea) and i can watch them at my command. Price is high but more or less same as ext HDD

Hi all,
I think you cannot review a product without using it for sometime. I has used normal tata sky for 10 months before migrating to tata sky plus in July first week. This is the best DTH product money can buy in India.
I am really happy i paid 999 emi for 6 months for the upgrade.
Now you can record 2 channels one time or see one channel and record another one.
If somebody calls me during a movie i do not need to reduce the volume anymore.. just pause it.
After 2 and 1/2 month of using the product I do not regret on spending the money.
If you are willing to spend money on a DTH product instead of taking a cable connection then buying tata sky plus is the best bet.

No more what people say I found that tata sky service is best among the market.
Both time installation was swift and was done at a time suitable for me and 2 people who came for installation were tata sky employee’s.

Tata Sky Posted Net aggregate loss of Rs.806.36cr

Whereas, Dishtv is only DTH company who is EBITDA Positive for consecutive 2 quarters.
Commenting on the Q1 results, Subhash Chandra, Chairman, DishTV, said, “It is heartening to note that despite a weaker economic climate, the direct to home (DTH) segment, which was pioneered by DishTV in India, continued to grow at a strong pace. Digitisation of Indian television has gained irreversible momentum, while driving higher quality and a superior offering to the consumers.”
He further said, “We have extended the momentum gained during the last fiscal into the first quarter of FY10. Our revenues grew exponentially to Rs 2,521 million, a growth of 53 per cent over last year and I am glad to report that we achieved positive EBITDA for second successive quarter. These results are a direct outcome of our business strategy that is tuned to the needs of our customers.”
Jawahar Goel, Managing Director, DishTV, said, “The Q1 results testify to the resilience of our business model. DishTV continued to consolidate its leadership position in the market through record customer additions every month. The outlook for the industry remains positive and the year ahead promises to be an exciting one for DishTV.”

i have a tata indicom phone, a tata sierra car and use tata salt in my kitchen and i bought my tata sky at its launch in aug 2006. i have been reasonably satisfied through these years. but tata slowly started removing some prime channels and radio services one by one. while i can understand tata undergoing losses but thats because other dth services were selling their products and packages at a more competitive price. now take for instance this tata sky plus. how can someone suddenly drop the price of the product by 4000 rs in a jiffy? it clearly indicates that their pricing was not justified earlier(or may be even now)what is the customer who has bought his product at the old price left with thinking? i am a naval engineer looking after complex weapon systems and antennas onboard. certainly more qualified to install and tune the small tata sky mini dish than their service engineers. yet they did not hand over the stuff to me on my request and were adamant about installing it themselves even when i told them about the security clearance hassles for me if they come to our base.just for those 1000 rupee installation charges.tata according to me has to change its mindset and stop robbing its countrymen who made them what they are today.

Hi,
Thought of putting my words after using TS+ for about 10 months.
See, world keeps on going even without TS+. You basically have to see it from functionality and cost point of view. It may not be useful or affordable to all class of people.
What you get when you have is just a piece of mind. As told, pause/record for some live events may not be useful for those who are really following up with the program. But even if i know that Jenson Button has won yesterday’s F1 GP, still i would like to watch the race/how it happened and not sit quite with the results. Seeing Live is a different experience all together, point taken.
When it comes to soaps/serials, i cannot watch anything which comes at 8:30 PM – i’ll not be at home. So, i watch at 9:30 PM. I’m not mad to sit and watch at midnight. Even if the program repeats, who will take pain to follow up with the repeat telecast.
If you have time to do research on programs on TV and catch them at the right time, you don’t need TS+. If you find it hard/frustrated to find out those details, follow up by remembering what comes at what time, what if power supply fails and etc. etc., TS+ is for you. You will not mind busting that amount. You will feel relaxed with TS+ features and you will happy because one more thing at home is automated and has a cutting edge technology. It’s a lifestyle product right now.
Of course, fighting with wife and kids for the time slot will be eliminated. If you feel that you can buy a 21″ TV for the TS+ cost, go buy it. Still, you will not get TS+ features, LOL!
Of 8999/- or whatever, you will be paying for annual cost for channels also. Box costs half of it. When you spend 1750 – 2000/- buying only Tata Sky, paying additional 2500 – 3000/- for the Tata Sky + which gives all these benefits is not a big deal.

All your points are well taken.There is a specific target group for TATA Sky + which it is catering to.For them its an awesome product but not for generic audience.The ads doesn’t seem to differentiate on that.

In the whole of the above discussion one point is missing. That is, in the recording of any programme, you can easily avoid the irritating ads breaks. But in any repeat telecast of sports/soap etc you cannot do away with them. But, one thing I am sure-if TS+ rates come down the produc will be much more popular. Thanks
