Plagiarism in Hindi film industry-Inspiration or Theft ?
Indian film industry is something which we all are proud of.Even i am.But some times i become very disappointed when i see or hear things on TV which i have seen or heard before.
Few days back i heard this new song Aahun Aahun from the movie Love Aaj Kal,it was nice but i was like “Pritam! not again dude!”
The song is same as a famous Punjabi Song ‘Kadi te hass bol ve’ which i used to hear in college days. This is not new for Pritam. He has been doing this from long time now.
All his major hits have been copied or inspired from some song from Korea,Indonesia,Malaysia,US and now Indian folk. For complete list of his wonders visit this link.
In fact the site itwofs.com has details of all other music directors who have been ‘inspired’ in the past.Who can forget Anu Malik and his multi-version Makarina.
Even the likes of RD Burman figure in the list with proofs. It was sad to find out few instances of A R Rehman were also listed with the songs(but these are just inspirations not complete rip offs).
This issue of Plagiarism is not just in music but also in movies. Most of our movies are direct scene to scene rip offs of some hollywood flick.
Why plagiarism is so much prevalent. Is it a way of life ? Not just the film industry,we all plagiarise.
Recently in Australia,Indian students have been accused of copying their reports of their master courses.
Google has become a source of Plagiarism not knowledge.Inspiration is not a bad thing but plagiarism is.
All know that people like Pritam copy or steal tunes of others but no one does anything because he gives hits after hits.He gives hits after hits because we listen to what he offers. When we listen,it means business.Plagiarism thrives.
I watched this episode in which Karan Thapar grills Pritam and Anu Malik for plagiarism. The episode seem to be 2 years old.Same story same allegations but 2 year down the line nothing has changed.
This is a serious issue and needs to be curbed. Many talented composers lag behind because they dont have the ability, which pritam and anu have.
Are we to blame ?
Is our Indian mentality to blame ?
The issue of Plagiarism is not new and is not restricted to a certain section of society but is omnipresent and is waiting to be thrown out of our lives.

Hi
Nice Write up…
but i was havin a deja vu while reading it..
or may be i have read it smwhr else too..
or may be u hav picked it up from there!!
Anyways I’ll come to the point..
I mean these ppl hav just modified the song without reinventing the wheel.. & made it a huge success..
they hav just made it reach to a larger audience..
so there is nothin wrong in it & especially if they are admitting it that they r doin it.
I mean this thing has been present in so many things.. take our constitution, accounting standards, various industry policies.. so why make a issue of music now??
Cheers
Sumit

As far as constitution and accounting standards are concerned,it wud have been reinventing the wheel but music is different.
you cant just rip off someone else’s song and give it ur name thats ethically wrong.
and pritam and anu have never admitted their thefts but now are being forced to do.
and cheers ke bachche bahut deja vu ho raha hai tujhe !

???? ?? ????
Plagiarism aka “Inspiration” has serious repercussions.
It discourages innovation and hard work (If you consider Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V as work/innovation then ???? ?? ????? ??)
Its unethical to pocket someone else’s years of labor and hard work just because there are no laws preventing you from doing that. You need to pay in terms of recognition as well as mullah. Adding an extra word or a spelling-mistake to a poem doesn’t make anyone a creator.
This is the reason I never pay for Indian Music/Movies if they appear to be “Inspired”. ??? ?? ???? ???? ?? ???? ????? ??? ?
???? ?? ?????? ?? ?? ?? – The “Inspired” Musicians and other artists are the judge/host for the burgeoning talent shows, proclaiming to inspire young artists ha ha ha

“He gives hits after hits because we listen to what he offers. When we listen,it means business”
There’s no business without earning, not so simple but still don’t pay.
If you feel guilty buy Indian Ocean

Dear thats why its “not so simple” but let me do my part and not pay them.
I used to love this song “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” from Gangster awesome lyrics and music, but when I came to know that its a complete rip-off, “B@$ C#%” it made me bitter.
It reinforces my belief that in Bollywood if its hit 99.99% its a rip-off
Mortals like me cant help liking a copy of a master piece in the absence of the master piece. Copyright laws may require amendment but then what and how and who’s gonna do that ? Even then the legal framework of copyright itself can be abused by big shots.
Nothing works unless the society, that includes you and the corrupt-me, have moral-fiber

While I don’t agree with plagiarism in Hindi music ( it happens too often), you find it even in Western pop music. One example is that of the instrumental theme towards the end of the movie ‘Saturday Night Fever’ when Travolta dances on the floor. It is actually a Beethoven composition. I will post more when I have some time.
